Be a good listener

Cancer can be a very lonely and isolating experience so stay in touch.

Often just being there and being a good listener is the most important thing when someone we care about has cancer. Let them take the lead. If they want to talk, be a good listener. Remember, it’s safer to ask questions or listen rather than give advice. Turn off any distractions and give them your full attention.

Cancer patients don’t always want to think or talk “CANCER” so talking about other things are often welcome distractions.

It’s important to let them be sad or upset and try to be okay with silence. Sometimes silence is comforting and feeling safe with companionship is good. They might even dose off for a nap knowing you are there.

But most of all, be yourself. Try not to worry about whether you are doing things the right way.

As Shelli would often say,

#listener #goodlistener #cancer #TheKitFoundation #kitforcancer
