Whether it’s lip gloss, lipstick or the lip balm sharing can be very harmful.
A large percentage of people carry HSV-1 (otherwise known as oral herpes) without knowing it is in their system. Every product that directly touches the lips can become a source of infection.
“Bacteria can transfer through the membranes of your mouth into your bloodstream,” says Dr. Whitney Bowe, board-certified dermatologist in New York City. Lips have an extensive network of blood vessels just under the surface, she says, ready to absorb anything you apply on the mouth, germs included. “Herpes simplex virus, which causes cold sores, can be spread between two people sharing ChapStick, even if the infected person has no visible sores,” says Bowe. Also lip gloss, lipstick or lip balm is a wet environment that is accommodating your own bacteria (soon to be your friend’s bacteria too if you share).
As much as we love each other’s lip glosses, lipsticks and lip balms and love trying the color on our lips sharing is a definite NO NO! Keep your Burt’s Bees lip balm in Kit just for you.
