If in doubt, throw it out is the most important food safety guideline.
Cancer treatments, such as radiation and chemotherapy, weaken the body’s immune system by affecting the blood cells that protect against disease and germs. This puts cancer patients at greater risk of suffering infections including those that can be brought on by disease-causing bacteria and other pathogens that cause foodborne illness.
If you aren’t sure that food has been prepared, served, or stored safely, throw it away. Reheating food cannot destroy the toxins or some bacteria. Don’t eat or taste it —contaminated food can taste, smell, and look good enough to eat. Never use canned goods that have dents in the seams or bulging lids or packages with damaged or broken seals.
