It is important to take extreme care not to trip or fall. Some risk factors for falls are relatively easy to change, especially when it come to your clothing.
Cancer patients can spend longer periods in their dressing gowns. Avoid wearing clothing such as your dressing gown that is too long or touching the floor or loose and can catch on things. This can cause you to trip over, especially if it has a tie around the waist that keeps coming undone. Trousers that are too long are also a problem.
Do not wear socks and avoid loose or floppy slippers or shoes. Use slippers and shoes with a rubber sole to prevent slipping improving grip and keeping you safer at the home or hospital. They need to be flexible, roomy and airy to avoid swollen feet.
Patients undergoing cancer treatment are more at risk for osteoporosis and bones weakened from metastatic cancer can break or fracture. If you fall, let your medical team and your caregivers know. They might need to check you for injuries.
