Your risk of tripping

It’s hot weather and it’s hard to resist the urge to break out the flip flops. Unfortunately we are tempted.  Wearing flip-flops makes you take short strides increasing your risk of tripping and becoming extra clumsy.

Many medications, treatments, and diseases  can cause problems with imbalance and dizziness, which affects your mobility. Patients can stress that they are becoming a burden and worry about asking for help to get up or walking. Falling would be a worse result for both the patient and the carer.  Remember to change positions slowly allowing the body a chance to adapt to the position change.

It is important to notify your medical team if you notice you are feeling weak, experience any dizziness or having trouble with your balance. If you fall, let your carer and medical team know as they might need to check you for injuries. They may recommend a cane, walker or wheelchair. Keep it close by and use it when you get up, even for short trips.

Ask about home help that may be able to make your home safer for you.
