Trouble sleeping is a common problem for cancer patients.
This can be difficulty falling asleep, waking up during the night, or early morning wake ups with the inability to get back to sleep. This may be caused by symptoms related to cancer treatment, pain, fatigue, breathlessness, depression or anxiety and feelings of isolation. Some medicines can also disrupt sleep (e.g. hormone therapy for breast cancer). Other factors may be an irregular sleep pattern, excessive amount of time spent in bed, napping, excess use of electronic devices before sleep or just unrealistic sleep expectations.
Facebook chats are wonderful company for those not sleeping. Shelli spent many hours chatting to her US friends during the night.
