Understanding medication instructions

Patients should have a written instructions from the pharmacy advising when to take their oral chemotherapy drugs and other medications. Make sure you read and understand the information.

Always take your medication as directed by the Doctor or Pharmacist. Some medication is instructed to be taken with food and some on an empty stomach. This also includes taking it at the correct time and on the right day. The instructions are always printed on the medicine label on the bottle.

If taking chemotherapy tablets or capsules always swallow them whole. Do not open capsules and NEVER crush, cut, chew or bite tablets.

Wash or hand sanitise hands after handling the chemotherapy tablet or capsule. We’ve popped a pocket size Thank you hand sanitiser in Kit.

If the patient cannot swallow the tablets, talk to their medical team immediately.
