Are you feeling weak, confused or clumsy? Beware of falling! A person who is unsteady on their feet is at high risk for falling. This can happen just to fall trying to get out of bed, or falling off the toilet, slip in the bathtub or shower, or lose their balance as they’re walking. Bones weakened from metastatic cancer can break or fracture. Even minor falls can result in broken bones. It is extremely important for the patient to take special care.
To reduce the risk of falling do not walk around in socks or stockings without shoes when walking on tiled floors or polished floorboards. The patient should wear shoes or non-skid slippers when walking or standing. Avoid using slippery shoes or open-heel loose bedroom slippers.
If you fall, let your medical team and your caregivers know. They’ll want to help prevent future falls, and might need to check you for injuries.
