What’s your go-to when it comes to fruit? Watermelon was a favourite of Shelli’s. Cold watermelon smoothies with a touch of mint were her favourite especially when she had bad mouth ulcers. We would freeze the watermelon and then blend when required.
I’m a fan too. I love this time of the year when it’s back, looking good, in the fruit shops. Watermelon is one of the most hydrating foods you can eat with 92% water content and quite low in calories, approximately 46 calories per cup. Over half of that cup, 154-gram serving, is water content.
It also has important nutrients,
- Vitamin C: 21% of the Reference Daily Intake (RDI)
- Vitamin A: 18% of the RDI
- Potassium: 5% of the RDI
- Magnesium: 4% of the RDI
- Vitamins B1, B5 and B6: 3% of the RDI
Watermelon is now commonly used it salads, drinks or just a refreshening snack. Eating smaller, frequent meals or snacks can be better than facing a large meal.
