Ding-A-Ling Day

The 12th December is Ding-A-Ling Day, a day to “Ring your Bell” and call friends and family that you haven’t spoken to in a while. There are all sorts of people in our lives who manage to slip out of our lives who would love to hear the ding-a-ling of a call from you.

History says it all started in 1972 by Frank Hyle, who took an ad out in the local paper stating that for just $1, you could join the Ding-A-Ling Club. The response was 871 members, which, by my count, is about $850 for Mr Hyle, after he accounted for the price of the ad. The Ding-A-Ling Club would call friends and family members every year on this date.

After the initial diagnosis cancer patients are usually overwhelmed with response but as the journey becomes long friends and family seem to disappear. Check in and ding-a-ling a friend or family member with cancer or their carer. It can have an amazing affect on patient’s spirits. Leave a message and if they do not answer don’t be disheartened if you don’t get a reply. They may be too sick or too tired.
