Regularly Review your Medications

It’s important if you have a long-term illness to review your medications regularly with your main medical professional. This includes prescribed medication, over-the-counter medicines, vitamins and herbal and alternative medicines from various sources. Some medicines don’t mix, may cause nasty side effects, driving problems or may be affected by alcohol.

Your pharmacist can also provide a print out of your prescribed medicines and the times they need to be taken to help with managing your medicines. It is important that medication is taken as prescribed.  This includes taking it on the right day, at the right time, and with or without food, as directed. For those who are forgetful, there are timers that can remind you when to take medications.

If you are a carer or family member it is a good idea for you to go through this with the patient to make sure they have understood this information. Make sure the patient understands that they must take medication exactly as their medical team or pharmacist has advised.

Your medical team needs to know exactly what your medication plan is. Some therapies may not be recommended during your treatment as they interfere with your treatment and/or worsen side-effects.
