With isolation and only attending the Doctor’s surgery when absolutely necessary it’s been easy to put off getting your flu shot. It’s Winter next week so act now!
Already this year Australians are getting flu shots in record numbers as experts tell people to get vaccinated to help the health system focus on coronavirus. As reported in the Canberra Times “More than 7.3 million flu shots have been administered so far this year, compared to 4.5 million this time in 2019 and 3.5 million in 2018.”
The chance of getting sick during the cold weather is even greater for cancer patients. Your immune system will be weakened by cancer and treatments putting patients at higher risk of serious and even life-threatening problems if they get the flu.
Because viruses are constantly changing, new strains of the flu virus appearing every year so it’s IMPORTANT to consult with your medical team BEFORE being vaccinated. Plan your flu shot during your treatment cycle when your blood cell counts are near normal, not when they are at their lowest. For Lymphoedema with arm problems, there is always the butt!!
Friends, caregivers and family, including children, should also get the influenza vaccine so that they will not pass it on to you.
